VISION: No resident of Broomfield will have their ability to thrive diminished by a lack of access to safe and affordable housing.
MISSION:
Partnering to create abundant, attainable, inclusive and sustainable housing that gives all residents of Broomfield an opportunity to thrive.
We believe housing makes a mark. Our identities are as shaped by the environments we live in, as they are by the people we live around. No matter what their individual experience may have been, every person has deep, emotional connections to home that influence nearly every aspect of their lives — from how they feel safe, to how they define success, to how they experience belonging.
We know housing has an outsized impact on each person's ability to thrive in this world and participate in their community. And while the ability to thrive is ultimately up to the individual, the opportunity to thrive is the direct and immediate result of the systems we create as a society to support healthy, inclusive and sustainable communities. This is the immutable truth of housing.
In 2001, when Broomfield became a county, the City Council determined the need for a housing authority to operate within the limits of the City and County of Broomfield. Members of City Council members were appointed to serve as the Commissioners of the Housing Authority Board.
With Broomfield not immune to rising housing costs making housing largely inaccessible and unaffordable across the country, Broomfield established the Housing Advisory Committee (HAC) in 2016. Consisting of community leaders, faith based organizations and local nonprofits, the HAC was convened to examine housing issues in Broomfield.
To assess the housing needs of the Broomfield community, the HAC recommended the commissioning of a
Housing Needs Assessment.
The recommendation resulting from the Housing Needs Assessment included the creation of an independent Housing Authority Board primarily focused on addressing the housing needs of Broomfield. An independent board offers a focused and nimble approach increasing opportunities for engagement and investments in public and private partnership. Following HAC recommendation, further research and community engagement, and a public hearing, City Council approved the creation and authorization of an independent Housing Authority Board of Commissioners.
In October 2021, City Council voted to establish a separate Housing Authority Board to pursue and leverage resources needed to increase housing options and supports for Broomfield residents. This action transferred the powers and duties from the existing Board of Commissioners, who were the City Council members, to an independent Housing Authority Board of Commissioners appointed by the City. The inaugural Board of Commissioners to serve the independent Housing Authority was appointed in December 2021. The Broomfield Housing Authority, with its newly appointed governing Commissioners, was created January 1, 2022. Its first Executive Director, Kristin Hyser, started in February 2022.
In mid-2022, the Board of Commissioners voted to adopt the trade name Broomfield Housing Alliance to affirm its commitment to forging mutually beneficial relationships to create housing opportunities serving the Broomfield community.
